If skin is the part of general practice you actually enjoy
Most GPs with a skin interest end up doing it in the gaps. A few excisions on a Thursday, a dermoscope in the bottom drawer, and a waiting room full of everything else. Newcastle Skin Medical Centre is the other way around. Skin is the entire list.
The practice has served Newcastle and the Hunter for over 35 years and covers the full breadth of skin medicine, not skin cancer alone: checks and surveillance, minor and complex excisions including flaps and grafts, medical dermatology, patch testing, phototherapy, and laser and broadband light. It is a general practice, staffed by general practitioners, doing work that in most cities is split across three different places.
We are looking for GPs who want to do more of that work, not less.

Skin work, all day
You will not be fitting a lesion check between a sore throat and a care plan. Every appointment in your day is skin: checks, dermoscopy, surgery and medical dermatology, in a practice built around nothing else.
The full breadth of skin, not cancer alone
Skin cancer is the bulk of the work, but the practice also manages psoriasis, eczema, acne, rosacea, alopecia and other complex skin disease, alongside patch testing and phototherapy. That range is unusual in general practice.
Equipment you would otherwise refer out
DermEngine imaging for lesion comparison over time, a Fotona SP Dynamis laser, broadband light, UVB phototherapy and a dedicated patch testing service. All in the building, all available to your patients the same week.
Sessions that suit you
We have room for two more full-time doctors, and we are always glad to hear from GPs after one or two days a week. Both work here, and the current team is a mix of the two.
A practice team that has done this a long time
Reception, nursing and practice management are handled by people who have run this clinic for years. Recalls, results and the paperwork around a surgical list are somebody else's job, not yours.
Newcastle, and a commute measured in minutes
Georgetown, five minutes from the Newcastle CBD, with easy on-site parking. A real city, the beaches at the end of the road, and none of the two-hour days a metropolitan practice asks of you.
What we are looking for
The short version: a registered GP who already knows they like skin work and wants to do it properly, all week. In detail, here is what we look for when we talk to someone about joining the team.
Current AHPRA registration
General registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, in good standing.
Fellowship of the RACGP or ACRRM
Vocational registration matters here, because it is what gives your patients access to Medicare rebates for the consultations you provide.
Experience in skin cancer medicine and surgery
A demonstrated interest in skin, and time spent doing the work: checks, dermoscopy, excisions and the management that follows.
Training in skin
A certificate, diploma or fellowship through the Skin Cancer College Australasia, the Australasian College of Skin Cancer Medicine, or an equivalent GP dermatology programme, is well regarded.
Professional indemnity insurance
Current cover, appropriate to the procedural work you intend to take on.
If you have the interest but not yet all the training, we would still like to hear from you. Several of our doctors built their skin qualifications while already working in the field, and we would rather start the conversation early than have you wait until a certificate arrives.
